Reading
Lord, thou hast examined me and knowest me. Thou knowest all, whether I sit down or rise up; thou has discerned my thoughts from afar. Thou hast traced my journey and my resting places, and art familiar with all my paths. For there is not a word on my tongue, but thou, Lord, knowest them all. Psalm 139 vv1-4

Reflection
This is one of the most intimate psalms in the book. It is very reassuring to realise that God knows everything about us – but also a little un-nerving! How often do we do or say something that we would prefer God not to know about? However, this psalm is particularly good when we are feeling far away from God; it reminds us that even if we think we have sunk into darkness we will not be hidden from His presence. As the psalm progresses, the author turns to praise for everything that God is – his immensity, his power – and contrasts it with the detail in which God works in our lives. What an amazing God we have!
Spiritual Exercise
Can you think of times on your life journey when something has happened to make you think “that was just what I needed – but only God could have known that” ? Recognise that you are not alone, even with your thoughts.
