Lent Day 23 Passing through Waters

Reading

“When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.”

Reflection

I have found that when things are going well, we can think that we will be able to easily trust God if tough times come along. But then when hardship does come along, it takes us by surprise, and we find it harder than we thought we would, to know that God is with us. What’s interesting about this scripture is that the word used is ‘when’ not ‘if’. Jesus Himself explains that we will have troubles in this world (see John 16:33), but we are also promised today that we will not be overcome by these troubles. Why? God simply replies, “for I am the LORD your God … your Saviour.” How incredible!

Spiritual Exercise

Today, ask yourself these two questions. Firstly, who do you think Jesus is? Start by checking out John 8:12 – 36 to see what He says about Himself. And secondly, who do people say that you are? Think about how you would describe yourself, and who other people would say you are. Spend some time asking God to shape you to become more like Jesus and write down some ways that you think God is saying to put this into practice today.
