Reflection
The book of Psalm is probably the best book of the Bible that captures human beings both at our best and our worst. It is filled with the rise and fall of many and depicts the struggles of King David and many of his contemporaries. Psalm 42:2 captures that basic human need. The need to quench a thirst. Being thirsty is something we all experience and is something we cannot avoid. The need for thirst always asks for a response. The response is always a drink. What differs is what the drink contains! In our world today, many are thirsty. Not just for a drink. There is a universal thirstiness for knowledge, for peace, for well being and health and some it is for riches and comfort. Whilst these in themselves are not to be sought, the source from which they are sought matters a lot. As we know, the quality of the source of a well has a big impact on the water it produces. Here the Psalmist encourages his readers to thirst for God. This might seems absurd. But a thirst for God leads to drinking from the real source. The Living Water is of course Jesus (John 7:37). This Lent, could I encourage to quench your thirst with the right type of water? Ask God to fill you with The Living Water that only comes from Christ and all needs will be met.
Spiritual Exercise
Your to-do for today: “Why not make a list of your thirsts”? What are the needs that draw you away from God? Write these on a sheet of paper, Now look at the list again and list them as a priority. Look at the first of your priorities. Does you life and survival depends on it? If this is the case, hand it over to God and trust Him to take care of it. If your survival does not depend on it, still ask God for His help in quenching your thirst for these.
