Reading
Hebrews 12:1-2. Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Reflection
Nothing gets our heart beating like a 100-meter dash race with a photo finish. Athletes may have some different tactics, but we know one thing for sure; anyone with a chance of winning is looking straight ahead as they approach the finish line. The Hebrews verse reminds us that feelings of guilt and shame from sins of our past are hinderances and entanglements, causing us to look down. Our past experiences are easy to focus on when we are looking at ourselves… but not when we look to God. Lent is a good time to reflect on and release unnecessary baggage of the past we needlessly carry with us so that we can free ourselves to look up and let go. When we do, our father will lovingly be looking back at us.
Spiritual Exercise
Your to-do for today: Take a walk to a quiet place. At some point, stop and look up. You can even do this at your home by a window if you cannot get out. As you look up, imagine God looking back at you, but not just you – in fact looking back at the whole world. Reflect on how magnificent His glory is and how insignificant your past sins are. Take a moment to pray “Father, I know you are there. I know you see me and care for me. Help me to keep my eyes on you and give me perseverance for my daily struggles.”
