When you fast, do not look sombre as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

Reflection
This verse conjures up a very vivid image of religious leaders of the day wanting to show everyone how much they are giving up. The mere act of making a public display of your sacrifices essentially voids the effort. During this time of Lent we all have the opportunity to improve our relationship with God by following daily readings, such as these, and also to sacrifice things that are dear to us. Through these simple gestures we are showing God that we want to develop our spiritual relationship with him.
Spiritual Exercise
Your to-do for today: At some point during the day when you are missing that little something you have given up for Lent take a brief moment to say this short prayer.
Lord, as we are in Lent help us to draw near to you in praise, stripping away all that distracts us from worship. Amen
