Reflection
“Father, forgive them…”As he hung on the cross, dying to save the world, Jesus prayed those powerful words, “Father, forgive them…” – forgive them, forgive you, forgive me! Forgiveness is not always an easy option when we’ve been hurt and feel angry or betrayed. But holding on to resentment and hostility only hinders us and robs us of our peace. For a heart full of bitterness often leads to the emotional prison of anguish and pain. “Father forgive them…” reminds us that we must learn to forgive those who have wronged us, for forgiveness opens the way to life, love, and the hope of reconciliation – freeing us from hatred and bitterness. Jesus died for the forgiveness of our sins great and small, we must learn to forgive so we that can also be forgiven and be truly free.
Spiritual Exercise
Your to-do for today: Meditate Ephesians 4.31-32, then say a prayer for someone who needs your forgiveness, ask God to help you to forgive them. Give away the pain and the hurt for God to handle – just as Jesus did on the cross. Finish your petitions by saying the prayer that Jesus taught His disciples – The Lord’s Prayer.
