Reading:-Matthew 5:16

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Reflection

I like this verse from Matthew – up to a point. I like the idea of shining my light before others but…my problem is I quite like being the recipient of any glory that is gained! The really hard thing is shining your light and not getting the credit. I think Mother Teresa’s words about humility are relevant here, “If you are humble nothing will touch you, neither praise nor disgrace, because you know what you are”. This quote suggests that when we truly know what we are i.e., a child of God’s, then we no longer have the need to seek any glory or indeed even be aware that we are shining the light of God. Perhaps that surety of knowing that God likes us and loves us, and being willing to tell others about this, is the good works that will bring glory to God – without our even knowing…

Spiritual Exercise

The image of the candle burning in a dark kitchen at the top of today’s byte size shows just how much light can be emitted from one small candle. God is good and God is light but there is darkness in the world. From the tragic stories on the news, to the quiet sadnesses that people carry in their hearts, there is darkness. We cannot shine light into every dark situation, but we can tell people (and especially when we feel least ‘shiny’) that we believe God is Love. Pray that today you will have the opportunity to share that with someone who really needs to hear that message.
