“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”

Reflection

Let’s face it, being a Christian can sometimes be a chore. There, I said it! It would be lovely if we were always so overflowing with love and joy that we leapt to fulfil every command of Christ. But sometimes the thing we know we have to do for Jesus feels like good old-fashioned drudgery – making that phone call, attending that meeting, cleaning the church toilet. Our spirits flag, we become demotivated and start to slide away. One way to revive our enthusiasm is to remember that God himself, through the incarnation, undertook the drudgery of daily life in our world. Picture Jesus washing his disciples’ dirty, smelly feet! That drudgery became a sacred act. When we do something tedious out of devotion to Jesus, that act too becomes sacred. Remembering this can transform a chore into an act of worship.

Spiritual Exercise

If you find yourself not looking forward to doing something you know you must, try saying this prayer: ‘Lord Jesus, I delight to serve you in this’. It draws Jesus back into the picture and encourages us by reminding us why we do what we do.
