Reflection
In Thomas Hardy’s novel Far from the Madding Crowd, there is a scene where a celebratory harvest supper is in progress, but the hayricks have not been made secure. The hero Gabriel Oak senses that a storm is coming but only he and the heroine Bathsheba make any effort to cover the ricks; everyone else insists that there will be time enough on the morrow – and the following morning much of the harvest is ruined. Jesus points us to the wise and foolish virgins with the same message – not to assume that there is more time ahead. None of us know our future precisely, but we need to trust that God has it in his hands – and to listen to his promptings to get things done in good time and not to put them off!
Spiritual Exercise
Most of us have lists of jobs that we put off. Allow yourself five minutes each day (ideally in the morning) to reflect on the tasks that lie ahead, and ask for God’s guidance to get them into order of importance.
Music
