Reflection
God’s creation, how often do we stand in awe and marvel at the beauty of it! More particularly in summer perhaps, when we can literally observe the growth and arrival of these gifts graciously given to us. Why would God, we may ask, create such a diverse and stunningly beautiful world for us to live in? Simply because of His love for us, his ultimate creation. God has laid before us a world to appreciate for its beauty and diversity. He has, however, also created flora and fauna to be closely observed where we can learn important life lessons. For example, the patience of the spider building its web, the faithfulness of birds who mate for life, the intricate nests built with such skill and perseverance, the nurturing and fierce protection of the a mother for her young. The list is endless. The Bible repeatedly refers to nature. It is an integral part of our existence here on earth and we are called to appreciate it deeply and protect it as best we can.
Spiritual Exercise
Make today the start of a close observation of nature near you. Use your 5 senses to appreciate all that God has provided for our pleasure. The sound of bird calls, the smell of rain on the earth, the variety of colour in the leaves, the touch of sand or bark, the taste of fresh fruits. If you are blessed to live in the country, the options are huge. For those of you living in the more built up areas, search for the small things, be it a spider painstakingly building its web with such skill, a bee diligently gathering pollen or the growth of a small plant pushing its way into the world. What lessons could you learn from your observations? What characteristics are shown by the creature or plant you are watching? Strength, tenacity, patience, faithfulness, joy, peace? Does it fill your soul with gratitude to God for His incredible and awesome creation?
