Reading:- Job 12:7-10
”But ask the animals, and they will teach you,
or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you;
or speak to the earth, and it will teach you,
or let the fish in the sea inform you.
Which of all these does not know
that the hand of the Lord has done this?
In his hand is the life of every creature
and the breath of all mankind.”

Reflection
This passage contains a real sting in the tail as it highlights the awesome nature of creation both in its splendour but also in its ferocity and the cycle of life. Job’s argument goes that the meek and timid will be preyed upon by the powerful and selfish, that there is no automatic punishment of the wicked or reward for the just. This might seem a difficult lesson to learn but it is the inherent state of nature. In order to make sense of this we need to see the point of Job’s lament being the over-arching power of God who has created everything and holds our lives in his hand. Essentially we are asked to accept his dominion over us, give daily thanks and realise that “there by the grace of God go I”.
Spiritual Exercise
At some point in the day take a walk in the garden or in the woods/parks near you and listen to the sounds of nature. Use this time to reflect on its wonder and especially how powerless we are in the face of His Creation. Think positively on this now, embracing the fact that we are blessed to be able to share in this marvel and say this short prayer.
“Help us to care for and love the earth and all of creation with which we have been blessed, O God.”
