Reading
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. Reflection
“But what about you? Who do you say I am?” Asks Jesus. During our Lenten journey it is always appropriate to pause and ask the question “who is Jesus really to me? What does he mean to me?” Is he simply a great prophet, an influential spiritual leader, one member of the Holy Trinity, a fairy-tale figure? Or does he mean something more than that to me. Maybe we need to consider what our immediate response is when the name “Jesus” is mentioned in Church. And…..what about outside of Church. How do I respond when someone mentions the name “Jesus” in a supermarket, or on the high street, or around the dinner table?
Spiritual Exercise
Your to-do for today: If you are a person who says grace at every meal, then include the name of “Jesus” in your prayer. If that is not your practice, then maybe just think of the word “Jesus” each time you have a cup of coffee or a cup of tea today! Before you go to sleep spend a minute or two considering what that meant to you.
Music
Listen to a great song as you think about today’s reflection:
Be sure to come back tomorrow to read what the Apostle Paul had to say about Jesus.
